Once Saved, Always Saved?

Posted by truthoughts on January 10, 2009

I received a comment, Don’s Comment, that inspired me to write this article. In his comment, he brought up the questions of “Once Saved, Always Saved”, which is a debate that has circled the Church many times over. I am sure that you can find a plentiful range of answers on this topic depending upon whom you ask.

Don made some very good points in his comment for being once saved, always saved and I encourage you to read the short comment.

Lets begin with the scripture that he gave…

Romans 10:9-10

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

This is a great scripture to begin with. This is the sole foundation of salvation, however, there are many other verses to consider in this topic and that is what we will discuss in this article.

First, lets notice that the verse given above states that we must confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus… also, with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Well, what happens if you first confess and then later deny? This is the situation that Peter found himself in.

In four places, Jesus told Peter that Peter would deny Him three times before the cock crowed that next morning (Matthew 26:34, Mark 14:30, Luke 22:34, John 13:38). Then it shows Peter’s reactions when it happened in three places (Matthew 26:75, Mark 14:72, Luke 22:61).

Now, if we combine the following verse with the scripture in Romans 10, we begin to get a more balanced view of obtaining salvation.

Matthew 10:33

But whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father which is in heaven.

So, this verse being the case… how did Peter get around this for his salvation? We can find that out in these next verses. Pay close attention to whom it is directing the message to… Jesus is speaking to Simon, son of Jonas, which is also Peter.

John 21:15-17

So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

Now, notice that Peter had to restate his love for Jesus three times, which was in direct opposition to his three denials and as I stated before… did you notice that Jesus referred to Peter as Simon? Lets remember back when Jesus renamed Simon to Peter:

Matthew 16:15-19

He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona [son of Jonas]: for flesh and blood hath not revealed [it] unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Notice what gave Peter his name. It was the fact that he confessed with his mouth unto salvation and therefore became a new creation in Christ. Why did Jesus then revert back to calling Peter, Simon in the book of John? It was because he denied Jesus unto perdition.

We could stop there, but lets keep going.

Hebrews 10:39

But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

What was that??? “Draw back unto perdition”!!! Oh my, what would make him say that? Lets see a parable that Jesus shared:

Matthew 13:3-8 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some [seeds] fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

Matthew 13:18-23 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth [it] not, then cometh the wicked [one], and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth [it]; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Mark 4:3-8 Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow: And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up. And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth: But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.

Mark 4:14-22 The sower soweth the word. And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended. And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive [it], and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred. And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.

Luke 8:5-18 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. They on the rock [are they], which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of [this] life, and bring no fruit to perfection. But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep [it], and bring forth fruit with patience. No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth [it] under a bed; but setteth [it] on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither [any thing] hid, that shall not be known and come abroad. Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.

Within this “Once Saved, Always Saved” debate, there is the question of, if some confess to being Christians, but end up going to hell… were they ever really saved? Well, scripture implies that can be the case. Lets take a look at the topic of vessels. The Bible speaks of having vessels of honor and vessels of dishonor. Now, you may be wondering how I can imply that some in the “Church” would be considered vessels of dishonor… Well, lets look at that, shall we?

2 Peter 2:1-3 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

2 Peter 2:12-22 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption; And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, [as] they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots [they are] and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you; Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam [the son] of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man’s voice forbad the madness of the prophet. These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. For when they speak great swelling [words] of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, [through much] wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known [it], to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog [is] turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

Matthew 13:25-30 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

2 Timothy 2:19-21 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, [and] prepared unto every good work.

Lets take a look at another example of enemies within the Church:

2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away [their] ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

I will end on the following verses:

2 Peter 2:20-22 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known [it], to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog [is] turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

In Revelation 3:1-6 you can see Jesus’ letter to the Church of Sardis. Notice how He tells them that their works are dead and not perfect. Notice also how He references in verse 5 that IF they overcome, He will NOT blot out their names in the book of life. This means that if they do NOT overcome and continue in their ways, He WILL blot out their names in the book of life.

Lets also take a close look at Revelation 3:14-22 where Jesus is speaking to the “Church” of the Laodiceans. Jesus gets so upset with this Church’s lukewarmness, that He says if they do not change He will spew them out of His mouth.

Honestly, there are so many scriptures to share on this topic… however, room does not permit for me to dictate the Bible in its entirety to you. I highly encourage you to search out the scriptures for yourself and pray that the Lord will open your eyes to His Word and the understanding of His Word (Proverbs 4:7).

The following video is very convicting, please watch it.

I am leaving this comment because I have received a request to cover the other side of the argument. Well, I did not post this person’s comment because they had a link to a spam site, however, I would like to address this request.

Through my study, which I posted and through more study that I have focused on after my post was posted… I cannot argue the opposing side. Don’s comment stated the belief from the opposing side and I shared (very few) scriptures supporting another view.

The more I read from Hebrews through Revelation alone… it shows nothing but the fact that we are to obey or we will not be saved. Remember… faith without works (obeying) is dead and by faith alone we are not saved unless we are on our death bed and there is no time other than to confess as our obeying (action). Please read the Bible and find out for yourselves.

If you do not read the Word of God, you will not know how to be obedient and if this is the case, you will be of those who say “Lord, Lord” in the end (Revelation) and He replies to you that (even though you think you did so much in His name) “Depart from Me I never knew you”.

So, study to show yourself approved as the Bible says to do. Jesus said Himself that those who do not obey His commandments do not love Him and the Father is not in them and without the Father you do not have the Son.

I plead with you to READ the Bible, believe it, obey it so that you will escape those things which are about to come upon the earth and stand before the Son of man, blameless, with boldness and enter into His salvation.

Luke 6:46 Why do you call me Lord and do not the things I say. Obedience Vs disobedience is self evident. One of the things that has bothered me for years is to have someone reduce persnal Faith in Jesus The Christ to; just say what I tell you say and Pray how I tell you Pray and act like I want to act and now your eternaly secure and though I know there will be controversey to what I just stated, I will have come down on the side of, you had better treat your relationship with the reverence it due or else loss is an asolute fact, even our marriages teach us this. The marriage covenant is forever till death do we part! Just cause you said it doesn’t mean you can’t lose it. I know some will say yeh but God won’t allow you to be plucked out of his hand ! Look at Lucifer ! God never changes but you do, no matter what you you are changing all the time. Lot’s wife saved from Sodom Gomorah, only to ” disobey” and looked back. Well need I say more! Thank you and I don’t want any loss for anyone and neither does God. Bro. Lee

Thank you Lee for your comment. You have shared some valuable points. There truly are sooooo many scriptures to back up that the theory of “Once Saved, Always Saved” is not accurate. I couldn’t, however, post them all or I would be copying almost the entire Bible on my post. Thank you again for your comment… I hope that others will come to the true realization and weigh themselves according to the Word of God and not the opinions of man so that they will not be surprised at where they may end up in the end. Let not His sacrifice be in vain within the direction we choose to walk and live!

      Sincerely In Christ,
